Alexandria Harbour
The Port of Alexandria is on the West Verge of the Nile Delta between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake in Alexandria, Egypt. Considered the second most important city and the main port in Egypt, it handles over three quarters of Egypt’s foreign trade. |

Alexandria port consists of two harbours (East and West) separated by a T-shaped peninsula. The East harbour is shallow and is not navigable by large vessels. The West harbour is used for commercial shipping. The harbour is formed by two converging breakwaters.
Alexandria port is the main port in Egypt It is dated to 1900 B.C. were the pharaohs established a port west Pharoon and Pharous islands. This port was entitled Rakouda.
Port Description : The area of the port is about 2300 meters long and 300 meters wide. The port has docks with different depths and more than one entrance. Alexandria is considered to be the second important city in Egypt and its main port, moreover ¾ of Egypt's foreign trade pass through it, further more in Alexandria there are two ports, one is located eastwards and entitled the eastern port and the other westwards and entitled western port and there ia a T-shaped Peninsula separating them.
The harbor is protected by marine rocks and 2 break waters while the width of the entrance is about 400 meters and there are two fairways in between .
The port is divided into two parts separated by coke quays and breakwater. The first part is entitled the port or the inner dock while the second is known by the dock or the outer part and its area is 600 hectare, moreover the first part is devoted to general cargo trade and the second for petroleum or bulk cargoes. Also pilotage is obligatory for vessels coming in or out of the port. |
